What to visit in Cordoba

La Mezquita (The Great Mosque) – Cathedral of Cordoba
There are no words to describe this monument, a must to see this!. Even the fact that is one of Unesco’s heritage sites and one of the most accomplished example of Moorish architecture monuments cannot describe how amazing is it. Once you go there you can delve deep in the art and architecture of Mesquita.
It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary but it was originally a small temple of Christian Visigoth origin, the Catholic Basilica of Saint Vincent of Lerins. After, when the Moorish conquered Spain, the church was divided into Muslim and Christian parts. For some time, the Christian part was purchased by Muslims but in the end, in 1236, it was converted to a Roman Catholic Church which didn’t allow to Spanish Muslims to pray there. Muslims are still trying to achieve this but both the church authorities in Spain and the Vatican are rejecting the Muslims’ trials.

The Roman Bridge in Cordoba

Just when you get out of Mesquita full of excitement of this great monument you can relax by walking in the famous Roman Bridge that is built across Guadalquivir River. The Bridge, as we can see from its name, was built by Romans around 1st Century BC and it has 16 arcades, with total length 247 meters and 9 meters width. The arches are representing the Moorish architecture and that creates a perfect picture along the river.
You will of course see the Roman Bridge once you visit the Cathedral, it is located just outside, but do not miss a chance to visit it also during the night. The view and the whole scenery are amazing due to the architecture and the special lights that are placed there.

Torre de la Calahorra- Calahorra Tower

Walking across the river on the Roman Bridge, at the end you can find the famous Calahorra Tower. Enjoy the thrilling view from the tower and at the same time try to feel the history of the tower which it was built during the late 12th century by Almohads in order to protect the Roman Bridge on Guadalquivir. So, just to have a picture of it, the Roman Bridge connects the enormous Cathedral (Mesquita) with the Calahorra Tower. The tower was declared a national historical monument in 1931.

Public Transport? We love that Cordoba is such a compact city and easy to walk everywhere. Just let yourself enjoy the narrow and flower decorated streets by walking. It is really worth to spend some time on foot especially around Mesquita. All the streets are connected with each other in a way that you can’t get lost. You will always find your way and discover an interesting place or monument.

why study in Cordoba?

Why doing an Erasmus Córdoba Spain? It is a beautiful city located in Andalusia, Spain, on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. The pleasant atmosphere and the friendly and open character of its inhabitants make this city a very popular destination for students. In addition, the University of Córdoba has great prestige throughout the country. The best part, it’s cheap and perfect for having an amazing time for students on a budget.

Is it expensive to live in Córdoba?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions among students who come to the city. Cordoba has quite affordable prices when compared to many other European or even Spanish cities. It is always good to keep a certain control of your expenses when you are in Erasmus (even if it is a very cheap city), since, this way, you can avoid any surprises and you live more relaxed.

A student needs, approximately, a budget of € 500 per month to live in Córdoba (yes, this means Rent + food, how amazing is that?). As we have said, if you compare it with other destinations, it is a fairly low budget. In addition, we advise you to join one of the student associations in this city, since they offer discounts and very good deals in bars, venues, public transport and trips to students who join them.

To know Córdoba and live your experience in this city to the fullest, an essential part is that you discover its culture and traditions. If you want to know all the details and curiosities of the most emblematic places in Córdoba, you can take one of the guided tours offered at the tourist offices or online. There are areas of the city that have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this will not be strange when you have the opportunity to visit such imposing sites as the Mosque, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos or the Torre de Calahorra, a fortress. of Islamic origin. The multiculturalism of this city goes back many years and it is incredible to see how it has influenced the most important and characteristic monuments and constructions of Córdoba.

One more thing you need to discover about this city is its gastronomy. In Cordovan cuisine, recipes such as salmorejo, flamenquines, the tail of bull Cordovan, the fried aubergines with honey or the Cordovan cake, a very typical sweet of the city, stand out. Something very typical is going out to the bars to drink and have “tapas”, which are portions of food that are usually accompanied by beer or wine. Book your student accommodation Cordoba and enjoy this amazing student experience.
